Spot Fraud. Stop Fraud. - M For Money Credit Union

Fraud is real and it’s closer than you think

Fraud isn’t just something you read about in the news. It’s affecting real people, real families, and real lives every single day.

According to UK Finance, a staggering £629 million was stolen in the first half of 2025 alone. Behind every pound lost is someone’s savings, someone’s future plans, and someone’s sense of security.

The truth is, fraudsters are becoming more sophisticated. Their messages feel real. Their calls sound convincing. But the good news? A little awareness — and a simple pause — can go a long way in protecting yourself and those around you.

1. Be careful with your OTPs

One-time passcodes (OTPs) might seem routine, but they’re incredibly powerful.

  • Never share your OTP with anyone no matter how genuine they sound
  • Always double-check what you’re approving
  • If something doesn’t feel right, stop and question it

That quick pause could protect your money.

2. Take a moment before moving money

Fraudsters rely on urgency. They want you to act quickly, before you have time to think.

  • If someone contacts you unexpectedly, take a moment to verify who they are
  • Call back using a trusted number — not the one they provide. This needs to be done on a different phone from the one that you have.
  • Shopping online? Check the website carefully before making a payment

There’s no harm in being cautious. But there is real risk in being rushed.

3. When “Authorities” ask you to act

Some scams involve criminals posing as trusted organisations: even your bank or the police.

Let’s be clear:

  • No bank or police officer will ever ask you to move your money to keep it “safe”
  • They will never ask you to buy items or transfer money as part of an investigation

If you’re ever unsure:

  • Call 101 to speak to the police
  • Call 159 to safely contact your bank

These services are there to protect you. Don’t hesitate to use them. Please remember to use a separate phone from the one which the suspect called you from as they have ways to redirect the phone number to another fraudster.

The reality of fraudsters

Fraudsters are skilled. They may sound calm, professional, even reassuring. They create believable stories designed to gain your trust.

But their goal is always the same:
to access your money or your personal information.

And often, stopping them comes down to one simple step:
Pause and check.

Pause. Think. Verify.

We live in a fast-moving digital world, and it’s easy to react quickly. But when it comes to your finances, slowing down could make all the difference.

And don’t keep this to yourself. Talk to your family and friends, especially those who may be more vulnerable. Awareness is one of the strongest forms of protection we have.

Let’s look out for each other.

Stay safe.
