January has a funny way of stretching itself out. The celebrations are well and truly over, the credit card bills may have landed, and real life has kicked back in. By the time we reach the end of the month, many of us are quietly asking ourselves: How am I actually doing with money right now?
This isn’t about beating yourself up or setting unrealistic goals. Think of this as a gentle check-in, a chance to pause, reflect, and make small adjustments that can really add up over the year.
Here are three simple questions worth asking yourself as January comes to a close.
1. What surprised me about my spending this month?
January often shows us the reality of our finances more clearly than any other month. Maybe you spent more than expected on food, travel, or those “just one more thing” purchases. Or perhaps you surprised yourself by coping better than you thought.
Noticing patterns (without judgement) is powerful. Once you know where your money naturally goes, you are better placed to decide what you want to change (or keep the same).
2. Do I feel more stressed or more in control than I did in December?
Money stress doesn’t always show up as empty bank accounts. Sometimes it’s that knot in your stomach when a bill arrives, or the feeling that you’re constantly playing catch-up.
If January has felt heavy, that’s okay – you are not alone. The key question is whether you feel supported and in control, or overwhelmed and unsure. Being honest with yourself now can help you take steps to ease that pressure before it builds.
3. What’s one small thing I could do differently next month?
Big financial resolutions often fade fast. Small changes tend to stick.
That might be:
- setting aside a little each week into savings
- reviewing one bill or subscription
- building a small buffer for unexpected costs
- or simply checking in with someone for advice
You don’t need to overhaul everything at once. One manageable step in February can make the rest of the year feel far less daunting.
Moving forward, together
Money journeys look different for everyone, and there’s no “right” place to be at the end of January. What matters is knowing you don’t have to figure it all out alone.
