They’re here! The summer holidays are finally here! If you kids are anything like mine, they will be looking for snacks and ways to be entertained (and educated at the same time).
It can all add up so we’ve put together some ideas on how to keep the summer memorable, low-cost and low-stress.
At-home fun (that doesn’t feel like a chore)
You don’t need expensive toys or tech to keep the kids entertained. Sometimes the simplest activities are the most fun:
Themed days: Get creative with Pirate Day, Science Day or Jungle Day. Dress up, play games, and even tie meals into the theme.
Home cinema: Pick a film, make popcorn, close the curtains, and turn your living room into a cinema. Bonus points for homemade tickets. I got my kids to make some and ‘sell’ to us. It kept them busy while learning about money at the same time.
Craft time: Set up a little art station using supplies from Poundland or The Works – think paper, stickers, glue, and recycled boxes.
Kids in the kitchen: Get them involved in baking or cooking. Easy wins? Homemade pizzas, fairy cakes, fruit skewers or DIY wraps.
Free or cheap days out
You don’t need a big budget to make big memories. There are loads of local gems to explore:
- Parks and picnics: Try visiting a new park each week. Take a ball, frisbee, or a blanket and let them run wild.
- Library events: Many local libraries host free activities – reading challenges, craft sessions and storytelling.
- Museums and galleries: Lots of places offer free entry and child-friendly activities during the holidays.
- Local farms: Some open their gates to the public for little or no cost – perfect for animal lovers.
- Splash parks: If the sun’s out, head to a free water play area – instant fun and cooling off.
Money-saving tips
Small savings can add up big over the summer:
Bring your own snacks: Avoid the pricey café trips and pack food from home.
Use discount sites: Try Kids Pass, MoneySavingExpert, or Days Out Guide for family offers.
Travel smart: Look into off-peak travel times and railcards for cheaper days out.
Swap days with friends: Share the load – arrange playdate swaps with other parents – a break for you and them.
Keep it simple
Not every day needs to be jam-packed. Here are a few no-fuss ideas:
- Nature walks with a twist: Make a scavenger hunt – find something yellow, something soft, something weird-shaped.
- Treasure hunts: Indoors or in the garden, all you need is a few hidden items and clues.
- Junk modelling: Save your recycling and let their imagination run wild – build castles, cars, or robots. You will need sticky tape and glue to keep items together.
